Tony’s Resolutions

Several years ago, a dear brother suggested I read a biography, written by Iain Murray, on the life of Jonathan Edwards (1703 – 1758). A mighty theologian and philosopher, Edwards is considered by many to be one of America’s greatest minds. Yet, like most true believers, Edwards knew his walk with the Lord would be one of constant struggles and challenges. That’s why (in my opinion) he documented “The Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards.”

Jonathan Edwards 70 resolutions were prefaced with the following: “Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat Him by His grace to enable me to keep these resolutions, so far as they are agreeable to His will, for Christ’s sake.”

While my faith and level of spiritual maturity pale in comparison to that of Edwards, I am confident the two of us share the same God, the same Lord and the same Spirit. That being the case, I trust my resolutions shall serve to strengthen my resolve to walk in God’s ways and possibly encourage those who claim themselves followers of Jesus Christ.

  1. RESOLVED, by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, that I may cease from consideration of self; (Phil 2:3, 4:11; 1 Tm 6:17, Col 3:5)
  2. RESOLVED, to speak less and listen more; (James 1:19; Col 4:6)
  3. RESOLVED, to pray without ceasing; particularly for the spiritual needs of others, no matter their plight, background or circumstances; (Phil 4: 6,7; Rm 1:9)
  4. RESOLVED, to put the needs of my own household above all else; (1 Tm 3:5)
  5. RESOLVED, neither to let success nor failure enter into my consideration; (Col 3: 23, 24)
  6. RESOLVED, knowing full well the undeserving gift of grace and mercy from God, that I be less judgmental of others; (James 2: 12)
  7. RESOLVED, to make it my ambition to lead a quiet life, attend to my own business and work as long as God would grant me the privilege; (1 Thes 4:11)
  8. RESOLVED, to not worry about tomorrow, but rather, live each day as if it could be my last; (Mt 6:34; Col 3:2)
  9. RESOLVED, to awaken each day, knowing that I am one step closer to my home in heaven; (Phil 3: 12-14)
  10. RESOLVED, that at the end of each day, thankful that He is faithful and that I am forgiven; (Eph 2: 8; John 10: 27, 28)
